Lucy

Someone shakes me awake and I hear a terse, “Wake up, it’s time.”

My eyes open quickly and I see Dominic looking down at me with anger. “We’ve got to move and fast. You’ll have to sleep it off on the journey.”

He pulls me to my feet and I try to stand but somebody had better tell that to my legs because they buckle from under me.

He expels his breath sharply and reaches for me, tossing me over one shoulder and heading outside. I can’t even struggle because whatever he gave me is powerful stuff.

I just about manage to gasp, “Where are you taking me?”

He doesn’t answer and just moves faster. I use every ounce of fight I have left in me to struggle but I’m like a mouse in a lion’s jaw.

He heads to the underground parking lot and makes toward a white van parked near the elevator. Before I can get my bearings, I’m tossed unceremoniously into the back of it and the door slams behind me. Before I can even right myself, I hear the driver’s door slam and the engine start.

The van travels at speed and I crash against its walls, powerless to grip hold of anything to break my fall. The pain is almost unbearable as I hit the metal and fall against some chains dangling on the side. I taste blood and realize I’ve split my lip and the tears fall again as I try to get myself together.

It must be only ten minutes or so later that the van screeches to a halt and I hear voices. The door opens briefly and I’m blinded by a flashlight. Then a bag hits me square in the stomach and I hear a woman laugh as the door closes.

Once again, the van starts up and we move off at a steady pace. I can’t make out much because it’s pitch black but I fumble around for answers. The only thing I can feel is a couple of bags and something hard and slippery. It feels like a case, the sort that may hold ammunition and my heart leaps with terror. What has Dominic got himself into?

I think fast and find no answers. It’s obvious they’re running but from who or what I don’t know and why I’m involved is even more of a mystery? Then I think about Jet and my heart almost stops. What must he be thinking? I wonder if he knows I’ve gone and why? He must think I ran out on him.

I try to think how I got here and all I can remember is sitting in the bar with the girls and drinking cocktails. I remember feeling a little sick but nothing after that. Then a cold feeling creeps over me. Maybe Jet does know. Maybe this was all the plan. I’ve only got his word that Sydney sent him. Could this have all been an elaborate plan to remove me from something I still haven’t got a clue about?

A million thoughts all race around my mind but only one matters.
